Thyroid Storm: What Everyone Should Know

While a thyroid storm is rare, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms, especially if you or someone you know has hyperthyroidism. Everyone should know the causes, signs and symptoms of a thyroid storm. If you think someone you know if having a thyroid storm, go to an emergency room immediately.

Thyroid storm develops in people who have undiagnosed hyperthyroidism, or severely under-treated hyperthyroidism. It is marked by the extreme overproduction of the two hormones produced by the thyroid gland.

Some people with hyperthyroidism can have a thyroid storm after:

  • surgery
  • stroke
  • trauma
  • severe emotional distress
  • congestive heart failure
  • diabetic ketoacidosis
  • pulmonary embolism

Symptoms of thyroid storm

Symptoms of a thyroid storm are sudden and severe. Sometimes the symptoms can be so extreme that people aren’t able to get help on their own. If anyone you know is having these symptoms, go to an emergency room immediately. People experiencing thyroid storm need immediate treatment, because it is life-threatening and get worse quickly.

  • Fast heart rate
  • High fever
  • Persistent sweating or dehydration
  • Palpitations, chest pain, and shortness of breath
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Shaking
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Anxiety, confusion, nervousness, or deliriousness
  • Stupor or unconsciousness

Prevent Thyroid Storm

If you have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, the best way to prevent a thyroid storm is to take your medications as instructed by your doctor. Go to all your appointments with your Endocrinologist, and get blood work orders when requested.
